We were waiting on some specialist parts for under the
bonnet before the engine could go in, so we decided
to build up the interior from the back forward.
Looking
down into the aperture
for the sun roof.
Roof lining sealed around the doors
and windows read for fixing
round the sunroof
The finished article - 4 hours later
looks as good as new!
We
Started from the back and worked forward, but before we could
start on the interior we needed to get the messy job of the roof
lining and sunroof out of the way and boy was that a tough job!!!!
First we decided to get the lining in as then we could fit the
sunroof with the trim in place. In all honesty we could have done
it either way.
First we put all the sound deadening panels in place using photos
as reference we had taken while stripping it.
With all that in place we applied special adhesive to the roof
lining and with careful positioning started to fix around the
doors and windows working our way back to the bar which snaps
into place and tightens everything up. After that we fixed it
around the sunroof and applied the trim. Then finally the grab
handles made it really tight. Things to note though - don't overstretch
the material its not as flexible as it once was and really take
your time as the lining is very easily snagged.
The sunroof .. we searched for months to find a rot free mk3 sunroof
with no success. After examining several m4 versions we realised
with a little work it would fit (slight repositioning of some
of the fixing holes). The one we used was from an orion ghia and
was out of one of the last Mk4's totally rust free and I defy
anyone to spot the difference.
The only mod was using our original sliding shade and cutting
down the sliding brackets by about a an inch. Getting it in was
a really pain though a two man job. Tip mask the roof up with
several layers of masking tape and cloth to avoid the sharp edges
cutting your paintwork.
